COLUMBIA,SC - There's nothing like a family reunion and the Gamecock had a reunion at Benedict College. Some of the greats of the past came back to Columbia to participate in the 1st annual Dj Swearinger Celebrity Alumni Basketball Game. This is an event DJ always wanted to do.
"We've all been trying to do this for the past three years. Just get something to where we come back, have a great time with some of the younger guys and just have a great time-like a reunion. While we all gone and living our lives we wanted to come back and have a reunion," Swearinger said.
Houston Texan defensive end and former Gamecock Jadeveon Clowney came to Benedict and he was looking forward to seeing his football brothers.
"It's great to give back and come out here have a good time with the old players. I haven't seen a lot of these guys in awhile so to reunite with them and play basketball; it's going to be a good game."
A couple of guys with new deals and new homes like LA Charger Melvin Ingram and Stephon Gilmore of the New England Patriots were also in attendance to assist their former teammates.
"Anytime we can help out that's what we base everything we got going on. God put us on a platform to be able help out si that's what we're all about," Ingram said.
Gilmore went on to add that bond these Gamecock players has is strong
"A lot of these dudes we've been roommates together, we grew up together, got up and worked out together for four years."
"I think it's always good to try and build bridges with the former guys who started this program. Dj and all the guys he played with did a phenomenal job,"Muschamp said. "The notoriety they brought to our school and our program is really important and to have them stayed involved with our program is critical to me in building our program."
This was not just a celebrity game for the fans to enjoy but it allowed these Palmetto State icons to reflect and have some fun before they get back to doing things that make them stars.
Benefits from the event went to the Palmetto Health Children's Hospital.
