COLUMBIA, SC (WLTX) - Good news for the No.20 Gamecocks. They are in the top 25 in November which is the earliest they've been ranked under Frank Martin. That probably means you have at least one star on your team and Sindarius Thornwell is that star for USC.
The senior guard Sindarius is the SEC player of the Week. The award was announced on Monday.
Thornwell averaged 18 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and two steals last week to lead the Gamecocks over No.25 Michigan and No.18 Syracuse. Against the Wolverines his posted his 7th career double-double with 21 points 10 rebounds.
Then he stuffed the stat sheet in Barclays against the Orange with 16 points, six rebounds, 5 helpers and 3 steals. He was named Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational MVP.
Thornwell does it all for USC. He leads the team in scoring at 20 points per game and is their top rebounder grabbing 7 boards a game.
"He's played the one for us, he plays the four, he's played the two, he leads us in scoring, he leads us in rebounding. guards the best player on other team. I think he's the most under appreciated good player in the country," USC head coach Frank Martin said. "I'm ecstatic he's been rewarded for his efforts this early in the year."
Thornwell was humbled by the conference honor but he's had to overcome some obstacles to put together the performance he has to start this season.
"After my sophomore year I had surgery and sat out that summer and came into the season feeling good and played well. Now coming into this season was the first summer I had since my injuries to where I could prepare and train my body and work on my abilities and work on my game," Thornwell said.
"It just feels like it's all coming together at the right time. When our team needs it the most that's when it's all coming together."
The No.20 Gamecocks will host Vermont on Thursday at 6:30 ET in Colonial Life Arena.
