Victor Hampton Ready For Shot at Redemption

Columbia, SC (WLTX) --- Former South Carolina defensive back Victor Hampton has been relatively quiet as of late. As many Gamecock fans know Hampton as a very boisterous and outspoken player on the field. But the last six weeks have seemed to humble him. Hampton was passed over in May's NFL Draft. Hampton was not immediately contacted in the days after the draft to come in as a free agent. As the weeks went by, Hampton continued to stay in shape. On June 10, following a workout with the Cincinnati Bengals, he was offered a contract by them and the New York Giants. He chose the Bengals.

"I believed in all the hard work that I put in over the last four to five years," he said. "I stayed positive and I grinded everyday."

Many have wondered why Hampton was not drafted. Many pundits projected him to be a mid to late round selection. Following the draft, it was speculated that Hampton's activities off the field may have affected his draft stock. Police in New York City wanted to speak with Hampton and former Gamecock Kelcy Quarles following an April incident at a nightclub. He was also arrested for disorderly conduct following an altercation with his sister in the same month.

"You're going to be faced with adversity which is what I've been faced with a lot," a remorseful Ha

Since he stepped on the field, Hampton's bravado made him an easy fan favorite. Many were vocal in their support of Hampton on social media, such as Twitter and Instagram.mpton said. "Some...have been due to some of my decisions, of course. I've had to learn from the mistakes I've made."

"That's what I've tried to do over my four love to the fans," Hampton said. "I really appreciate all the fans in South Carolina and the other states that have been supporting me throughout this process."

The process is a long and winding one. Hampton will now look to the make the Bengals' 53-man roster following the conclusion of training camp. They'll begin training camp in Georgetown, KY on July 26.
