Roddick reached the second round, while top seed Richard Gasquet came up a
second-round loser Tuesday at the Aegon International, a final Wimbledon tune-
The sixth-seeded Roddick was leading fellow American Sam Querrey 5-2 in the
first set when Querrey quit with a back injury.
Roddick's opponent on Wednesday will be capable Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.
Meanwhile, Aussie qualifier Marinko Matosevic stunned Gasquet 1-6, 7-6 (7-5),
7-6 (7-3) in 2 hours, 26 minutes on the grass courts at Devonshire Park.
Gasquet fired 13 aces in a losing effort.
Another seeded Frenchman went by way of an upset, as Taiwanese Yen-Hsun Lu
dismissed No. 5 Julien Benneteau 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) in opening-round play.
In other first-round action on Day 2, seventh-seeded German Philipp
Kohlschreiber handled Japanese Go Soeda 6-4, 7-5, Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin
erased French left-hander and former champion Michael Llodra 6-4, 6-3, and
Belgian Steve Darcis dropped Aussie qualifier Matthew Ebden 6-2, 6-4. Llodra
titled here two years ago.
Also in Eastbourne on Wednesday, third-seeded reigning champion Andreas Seppi
will open his week against Argentine Carlos Berlocq in a second-round affair.
The Italian Seppi upset Serb Janko Tipsarevic in last year's finale here.
The 2012 Eastbourne titlist will claim $92,000.
