Melbourne, Australia (Sports Network) - Russian Ekaterina Makarova gained her
second straight Australian Open quarterfinal berth by disposing of fifth-
seeded German Angelique Kerber, 7-5, 6-4 on Sunday.
The 19th-seeded Makarova, whose best Grand Slam result came a year ago at
Melbourne Park, overcame 29 unforced errors and five double faults. Next up
for Makarova will be either second-seeded Maria Sharapova or Belgium's Kirsten
Flipkens.
Last year Makarova lost to Sharapova in straight sets in the quarterfinals.
Also Sunday, fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska takes her perfect 2013 record
into Rod Laver Arena against former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic, while
sixth-seeded Li Na faces Julia Goerges.
