Paris, France (Sports Network) - Australian Open doubles champion Roberta
Vinci highlighted Tuesday's singles winners at the Open GDF Suez tennis
event.
The fifth-seeded Italian vaulted past Romanian Simona Halep 6-0, 6-3 on the
indoor hardcourts at Stade Coubertin.
A Day-2 upset came when wild card and French crowd favorite Kristina
Mladenovic outlasted seventh-seeded German Julia Goerges 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4).
Also on Tuesday, Swiss qualifier Stefanie Voegele handled Bulgarian Tsvetana
Pironkova 6-4, 6-2, Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro topped Romanian qualifier
Monica Niculescu 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), and France's Alize Cornet held off Swedish
veteran Sofia Arvidsson 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
This week's top seeds are last year's French Open runner-up Sara Errani
and former Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova, who captured this Parisian
tournament two years ago. Kvitova will meet Voegele in the round of 16, while
Errani awaits a qualifier.
Errani and her good friend Vinci paired to capture the Aussie doubles title
last week.
German Angelique Kerber, who is not defending her title this week, beat French
star Marion Bartoli in last year's finale in Paris.
The winner of this $690,000 event will collect $125,000.
