Frank Martin has made it a point to schedule in-state teams when it's logistically possible to do so.
Case in point - the Gamecocks have hosted Division II programs Benedict and Coker College in exhibition games and now Newberry College will be coming to the Colonial Life Arena.
The Gamecocks and Wolves play Sunday at 4:30 pm.
"I never coached at a Division II (school) but when I was at Northeastern, I can recite to you the plays when we went to play at UCONN play-by-play-by-play and that was 16 years ago," said Martin.
"Just because of that moment, that opportunity that you as a player or coach have to go play against the big school."
Newberry head basketball coach Dave Davis says his team and fans are looking forward to that Sunday drive down I-26.
"An incredible opportunity for sure for our players, our coaches, our fans, our alumni" said Davis.
"Everyone is excited about the opportunity. Certainly a challenge. They're gigantic. They have six or seven guys 6-8 or bigger. and we'll play seven or eight guys 6-2 or smaller."
Martin says he is glad to be in a position to provide financial assistance to these schools who come to the Colonial Life Arena. He says he would rather write a check to an in-state school to help grow the game here at home.
