Is the Fourth of July weekend sparkling with great movie options - or is everything just a dud. Lee gives us his take on two. WLTX
(WLTX) - Tammy has had a terrible day. After losing her car, her job and her husband - she's ready to hit the road. But she can't head out on the highway without a set of wheels...and that's where her unhinged grandma comes in. She can take her car as long as she tags along. So, it's Niagara Falls or Bust for this dysfunctional duo.
Naturally, there's trouble along the way. The ladies meet up with a pair of guys who could be either the first or last thing they need. They also drop in on their eccentric Aunt Lenore to ring in the 4th. And, when they're in need of cash, Tammy holds up a fast-food restaurant in the nicest way possible.
Not only is this a big starring vehicle for Melissa McCarthy but it's also directed by her husband, Ben Falcone. They co-wrote the piece - yet, it feels as if they were making it up as they went along. This can still lead to inspired comedy. But, on the whole, it was a scattered mess. The strong supporting cast deserved better.
And I can't really say much more about "Deliver Us from Evil." It's supposedly a true story about a New York cop who is seeing things that he can't explain. After all the evil he has witnessed over the years, he gave up on faith long ago. But he may have to reacquaint himself in order to fight the enemy he's currently dealing with.
Of course, he can't do it alone. He'll need the guidance of a priest who can read the writing on the wall. And, if they're lucky, they'll be able to exorcise that demon and charge him with some blasphemous crimes!
Perhaps this film works better for those who believe in the evil that is being depicted. I, however, never forgot that it was just a movie with a bunch of random things popping out. It is intended to make us question our beliefs. Instead, it just makes us bored.
This 4th of July, avoid the multiplex and spend that money on fireworks. In either case, it'll make for a better show!
