"There was a horrible accident on I 26 with numerous injuries and a fatality. A child in the car was seriously injured and was screaming and inconsolable. The EMT's and Rescue personnel worked valiantly to free him and get him ready for the hospital.

"As I said a prayer, I noticed Deputy Casey Bouknight kneeling down and talking calmly into his ear and stroking his beautiful black hair until he calmed.

"It broke my heart to see a child, which looked like my son at that age, in so much pain.

"Deputy Bouknight used her law enforcement training, but most importantly her motherly instincts, to calm this child in a nightmarish situation.

"This is why I love the Newberry County Sheriff's Office and am so proud of the staff that serves.

"In closing, we are so blessed that we have the volunteer fire and rescue personnel to leave their homes and families to help people."
