Columbia, SC (WLTX) -Law enforcement around the Midlands and the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina are teaming up with Crimestoppers to put an end to copper thefts.

These type of thefts from home air conditioner units and larger utility companies are not only dangerous, but expensive. According to the Electric Cooperatives, thefts last year cost the state's co-ops nearly one million dollars in repairs.

In 2011, more than25 people were killed nationwide attempting to steal copper from electric utilities.

Locally, officials hope the new initiative will encourage citizens to anonymously report thefts to Law Enforcement.

The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina donated a check for $15,000 to Crimestoppers to help reward callers who help combat copper theft.
