Sumter, SC (WLTX) -- A 71-year-old great grandmother was robbed at gunpoint and beaten over the head with an assault rifle at her Sumter home.

The Sumter Sheriff's Department says it all happened last Friday night on Ideal Circle, but so far no arrests have been made.

It's an experience Dorothy Miller doesn't wish on anyone.

"It was very scary. I am surprised I lived through it," said Miller. "It was a horrible thing. Probably the worst thing that's happened in my whole life."

The great grandmother, who manages the Cherokee Mobile Home Park, was getting ready for bed when her dogs began to bark.

"Got up to see who it was. I walked to that blind there. I looked out and I could see someone on the porch."

When she cracked the door to see who it was, three men kicked it in. Miller knew then she was in trouble.

"They ran in there and fired the gun up in the air first," said Miller.

According to the Sumter Sheriff's Department, one of the men shot off two rounds from an assault rifle.

"He turned the gun around and hit me over the head with it. Hard. I started bleeding immediately. Then he hit me again."

Lying on the floor, Miller says she was kicked over and over while they yelled, "Where is the money?"

"He had the gun straight, this far from my face, and he said 'I'm going to give you one more chance, you tell me where it's at or I'm going to blow your head off I promise'"

Miller credits neighbors for scaring the men off and saving her life. But not before the suspects took a substantial amount of money that belonged to the mobile home park.

"I want to share my story because I don't want anyone else to go through this. It's the most horrible thing I've ever had in my life. That's saying a lot at seventy one," said Miller.

Sumter Sheriff Anthony Dennis says they are following a few leads into the robbery after some evidence was found at the scene. If you have any information that may help police in this investigation you are urged to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
