Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Richland County deputies say one suspect is dead and three others are in custody following abank robbery in northeast Columbia Friday morning.
The robbery took place at the Wells Fargo at the corner of Two Notch Road and Parklane Road just after 10 in the morning. Officers say four suspectswearing maskscame into the bank armed withautomatic rifles and pistols and began firing their weapons and began threatening customers and staff inside.
"They shot through the window and made us get down and they threatened to kill everybody," said Ray Davis, a pastor who was in the bank at the time of the shooting. "They weren't afraid to shoot."
After the suspectsgot themoney, they began firing into the floor and the ceiling, shattering glass.
No civilians were injured.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says there was a short car pursuit between officers and the suspect, and the suspects were hanging out of the car firing shots at officers as the vehicles drove down the road. At some point, the suspect vehicle stopped.
Lott saysthe suspects got out, and one of them gave themselves up. Another, however, threatened officers, saying "I'm going tokill you"whilepulling a weapon out. AColumbia policeofficer and a Richland County investigator firedat the suspect, killing him.
The remaining suspects were arrested over the next four hours. Lott says one of the men had taken off his ankle monitoring bracelet that had been given to him by law enforcement for a previous offense.
Deputies identified the suspects as the following men: 26-year-old Ozzie Carreker, 22-year-old Rashad Hall, and 21-year-old Naim Stroman. They're all charged with armed robbery, three counts of attempted murder, and 15 counts of kidnapping.
Acounty helicopter was up in the air looking for the suspectsand K-9 officers are searching in the area. Peoplewere being blocked from accessing Highview Drive. A News19 photographer observed money still in its binding in the middle of the road at that location.
Lott says deputies believe they've recovered all the money.
As a precaution, nearby Dent MiddleSchool,Keels Elementary School, and Anna Boyd Elementary Schoolwere put on modified lockdown.
