Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) - Financier Darla Moore has pledged $1 million to the Claflin University music department.
"This was one of the most special moments I've had in South Carolina," said Moore at a celebration Tuesday. "I'm still a little choked up about it. It was just the most moving, touching and reaffirming in my decision to support the music department here."
Moore's donation will benefit the university's music department, which she says she noticed when they sang at a building dedication two years ago.
At the Tuesday celebration, the music department performed a song they wrote to thank Moore for the donation.
"I went in and wrote the words and thought about how much, how much it impacted us as a whole. And I basically came from us to her," said Betty-Alexandria Price, a Claflin freshman. "It shows someone still cares about us even though some may count us out as being a minority or a historically black college. There are people that see our skills and talents and I appreciate that."
Moore has been known for her philanthropy, particularly at her alma mater, USC, where's she donated tens of millions of dollars over the years. The business school there bears her name.
"Claflin has demonstrated, at least to me ever since I've been active in South Carolina, their commitment to excellence and their commitment to community service and for giving everyone a chance at a quality education," said Moore. "They perform at a high level and I've had regard for them for a really long time."
Moore is the vice-president of Rainwater Inc., a private investment company.
