Northridge, CA (Sports Network) - Chris Patton's layup with 11 seconds remaining lifted the UC Riverside Highlanders to a 65-64 win over the Cal State Northridge Matadors in Big West Conference play at the Matadome.
Patton finished with a game-high 19 points for UC Riverside (4-10, 1-1 Big West) which had lost four of its previous five. Josh Fox added 13 points and Chris Harriel tacked on 11 points.
Stephen Maxwell led four players in double figures for Cal State Northridge (9-5, 0-2) with 16 points. Stephan Hicks added 14 points, Josh Greene tallied 13 points and Trevone Williams chipped in 10 points off the bench.
At the end of a tightly contested first half Cal State Northridge led 32-30. UC Riverside trailed despite shooting 50.0 percent from the field, to just 45.8 percent from the Matadors, due to deficits from beyond the arc (6-0) and the free throw line (8-2).
The Matadors took a 64-60 lead with 42 seconds remaining on a 3-pointer from Greene. The Highlanders then got a layup and a free throw from Patton on the other end to pull within a point. UC Riverside then forced a turnover to set up the game winner from Patton.
The Highlanders dominated inside with a 52-26 edge on points in the paint.
