Carbondale, IL (Sports Network) - Tyler Brown scored a game-high 22 points and Jackie Carmichael posted a double-double to lead the Illinois State Redbirds to a 70-56 win over the Southern Illinois Salukis in a Missouri Valley Conference conflict at SIU Arena.
Carmichael notched 18 points and 10 rebounds for Illinois State (10-9, 1-6 MVC) which ended a six-game losing streak while picking up its first conference win of the season.
Jeff Early finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, Kendal Brown-Surles tacked on 13 points and Desmar Jackson tallied 11 points for Southern Illinois (8-10, 1-6) which has lost seven of its last eight.
The Redbirds ran out to a 47-21 lead at halftime by shootiung 51.4 pecent from the floor including a 7-of-14 effort from beyond the arc. Southern Illinois couldn't keep up as the Salukis hit just 33.3 percent from the field and 1- of-6 from 3-point range.
In the second half Southern Illinois improved to 50 percent from the field but could get no closer than 11 points.
Illinois State had a 41-31 edge in rebounds but it was Southern Illinois that had the 36-26 advantage on points in the paint.
