Columbia, SC (WLTX) -ASouthCarolina State Senator Lexington County Senator wants state educators to learn how to use a gun.
Lexington Republican Katrina Shealy supports legislation to allow concealed weapons in schools, and she is offering educators the chance to take classes to get a concealed weapons permit.
She says in light of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut, teachers need to be prepared.
"They [teachers] think, 'what would I do if somebody walked into my classroom,'" Shealy said. "You can't beat them [a criminal]off with a stick. You can't fight a gun with a desk. You can't fight a gun with a book. They should be able to have the same defense that somebody's fighting them with."
Shealy says the classes will be offered at a discounted rate and will be taught in mid-February.
