Columbia, SC (WLTX) -Some changes may soon be coming to the food stamps program.
State leaders are asking the federal government to make changes to the list on what's acceptable to buy on the program.
They would like to only allow the food stamps to be used on items that are nutritious like eggs, milk and whole grains.
"Right now the USDA has a number of arguments about why they don't want to make changes to the program,"explains Catherine Templeton, thedirector the State Department of Health and Environmental Control. "One of them is the difficulty in administering it. What would be on the list? One thing that's very important: I'm not asking for the government to be the food police, all I'm saying is that we shouldn't be paying for bad food we shouldn't incentivize empty calories."
More than 100,000 households in our state depend on food stamps each month to get the food they need for good health.
