COLUMBIA, SC (WLTX) - Columbia firefighters battled high winds to put out an apartment fire Wednesday morning.

Officials say they responded to a call around 4:00 a.m. at theStone Ridge Apartments at 1000 Watermark Place. When they arrived, they found several apartments engulfed in flames.

Chief Aubrey Jenkins says all of the residents were accounted for but two people had to be taken transported to the hospital. News19 does not know the extent of their injuries.

According to Chief Jenkins, therewere 12 units in this one apartment building and all of them were affected by the fire. The roof partially collapsed.

Red Cross workers are providing all 20 residents financial assistance to purchase food, clothing, shoes and other essential items. In addition, the Red Cross is giving each person a blanket and a hygiene kit, which includes basic items such as a tooth brush, soap and shampoo. A stuffed animal will be given to each child affected for a sense of safety and security. The Red Cross is also working with the apartment complex to secure temporary housing for all displaced residents.
