Columbia, SC (WLTX, AP) -- The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division announced multiple arrests made in connection with a federal investigation into aninternetcasino probe.

The arrest came after a multi-year investigation by authorities into a Florida-based non-profit that authorities say operated asan internet casino gambling operation. That investigationled to the indictment of 57 individuals in 5 states, and also prompted the resignation of the Lieutenant Governor of Florida on Wednesday.

According to authorities,Allied Veterans of the World, Inc. and Affiliates was placed under investigation by the IRS after agents executed a search warrant for an Oklahoma software company, and discovered the Florida fund-raising corporation centers were fronts for Internet Casinos that made hundreds of millions of dollars. According to the SLED release, little money went to charitable causes.

Nine arrests were made in South Carolina Wednesday, based upon fugitive warrants from Seminole County, FL, where the investigation is being based.

Florida Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll once performed in a Public Relations role for the charity, and although questioned in the investigation, Carroll has not been charged.She resigned from office Wednesday.
