Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Midlands lawyers say they have major concerns with people using the internet that are actually hurting their wallet.
"Lawyers are valuable to the way our society functions," said Cindy Coker with the South Carolina Bar.
But according to Coker some residents aren't talking with a lawyer about their problems, they're asking friends, using what they saw on TV and even searching the internet for their legal help.
"Because they've done a Google and they have found information about laws that may be from another state, they do not match SC law, they are buying and looking for things that we don't have."
Coker says one of the most common internet mistakes is when people purchase documents for divorce, claiming they had irreconcilable differences.
"We do not recognize that in SC so they have spent anywhere from $100 to $350 for the forms that do them absolutely no good."
She says there is a lot of misinformation on the internet and the best advice is to simply speak with a lawyer and in most cases the advice is free.
"People call the bar on a regular basis saying I need to know about something, I get about 10-12 emails a day just asking for general information."
So you may be wondering, what types of things are a must to have a lawyers help you on.
"If you are ending a marriage, you need a lawyer to make sure you are not giving up your right to your spouse's retirement and you didn't know you had a right to it."
Another must is to hire a lawyer when you are buying a home.
"You don't want to find our two years later that there is a bunch of liens on it that someone didn't tell you and now you are losing your house."
And Coker says each lawyer specializes in certain fields. So make sure the lawyer that you are getting help from is skilled in that subject matter.
