Columbia, SC (WLTX) --The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched Sunday morning for a water rescue off the Congaree River, under the Jarvis Klapman Bridge.

The rescue involved a motorized john boat that capsized, leaving its two male victims stranded on rocks.

Although one victim did not have a personal flotation device, CFD was still able to rescue him by lowering one which he secured to himself.

Both victims were rescued and no injuries have been reported.

CFD would like to encourage everyone to be safe when boating on the water by following these safety tips:

  • Learn to swim
  • Wear a PFD-always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) when you are on the water.
  • Never boat alone
  • Boating skills-be sure your boating skills and experience are equal to the river and conditions
