Columbia, SC (WLTX) - AAA Carolinas says Richland County is the third most dangerous county in the state for collisions.

The consumer group Tuesdayreleased data based on numbers from 2012.

According to AAA, Richland County had 285.7 total crashes for every 100 million vehicle miles traveled. Charleston County was number one, with 342.4, while Greenville County was second, with 334.5.

AAA says it bases its rankings on the likelihood ofa crash based on vehicles miles traveled.

"Consistently high rankings for being one of the most dangerous counties in the state should be a wake-up call for better traffic enforcement or road design," said David E. Parsons, president and CEO of AAA Carolinas.

Richland County was not in the top five, however, when those numbers were broken down further by fatal crashesper miles traveled. In the Midlands, only Saluda County made that list, ranking fourth.

AAA says rural counties usually lead in fatal crashes, because they have more secondary roads that may have poorer markings, limited police presence, and curves.

For safest counties in the state based on total crashes, Midlands counties made the top five: Clarendon (2nd), Lee (3rd), Calhoun (4th). Calhoun was rankedfirst in safety based on injury crashes.
