Columbia, SC (WLTX)- The summer rain has caused havoc on the roads throughout the state, including the Midlands.

Dozens of roads are closed and the estimated damage is a little more than $4 million.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation said there are 41 roads closed, 56 pipe failures, and 14 bridges that need to be fixed from all the rain.

David Cook with SCDOT said the matinence department has been under funded for along time.

"There are a lot of cracks in the road," Cook said. "It softens up the base of the roadway and causes a lot of pot holes and pavement failures on the surface.

Cook also said the transportation department budgeted $2.5 million for unexpected maintenance issues at the start of the fiscal year.

"We have money right now, but it's really going to take a toll at theend of the fiscal year when we're out of money," Cook said.
