COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Gov. Nikki Haley has declared Wednesday as "Let Freedom Ring Day" in South Carolina to honor the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.

The proclamation signed by Haley encourages people across the state to ring bells at 3 p.m. to commemorate the moment 50 years ago that King ended his famous speech. The King Center in Atlanta is calling for similar commemorations across the country.

Haley says King should be honored for promoting freedom, justice and equal opportunity across America.

King's speech was part of a 1963 civil rights march on Washington that brought hundreds of thousands of peaceful protesters to the nation's capital.
