Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Former South Carolina Head Football Coach and state lawmakerWarren Giese has died.
The university confirmed Saturday that Giesepassed awaylast Thursday in Columbia at the age of 89.
Giese coached from 1956 to 1960, postinga 28-21-1 record. Those 28 career wins still rank eight-most all-time for Carolina coaches.
In 1958, Giese's best year at the school, he led the team to a 7-3 record and a 13th finish in the final polls that season.
After leaving college athletics, Giese also had a long career in the South Carolina Senate where he represented Richland County.
Giese is survived by his wife Phyllis and four children. One of his children is former Fifth Circuit SolictorBarney Giese.
