Jenkinsville, SC (WLTX) -- A health center will provide better care for rural Fairfield County.

About $500,000 in grants from the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and SCANA combine to make the build possible.

All told, the build of the new facility runs $509,000, officials said Friday.

"We are building a new health facility, but more importantly, we're building a healthier community," said Janet Lynne Douglass, Nurse Practitioner at the existing home of Lake Monticello Family Practice.

Lynne Douglass said the current location for the facility was too small, but that they had made due, working there for 7-years.

It is about two miles from the location of the new facility on Highway 215 S in Blair, S.C.

"It will increase access to care for the people in this community," said Lynne Douglass. "We can offer more services, we'll have more room, more healthcare providers, and we'll have the ability to do much more sophisticated testing and things when we get into this new facility."

Jenkinsville is located about 26 miles outside of Columbia in a rural portion of Fairfield County.

Lynne Douglass said the location of the new facility is key.

"Healthcare in rural South Carolina is very important because people, if they don't have anywhere to receive healthcare, use the emergency rooms, which drives cost up," Lynne Douglass said.

About a mile away from the current location of the Lake Monticello Family Practice sits the McCrorey Liston School of Technology, home to about 180 elementary students, said the school's principal, Dr. Chandra Bell.

The Lake Monticello Family Practice and the elementary school will work together in a partnership to bring more health options to the kids at the school, officials said.

"We even have children in our building with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and so it provides the children with not only education and services," said Dr. Bell, "but it also teaches us, as educators and parents, how to deal with those things from day to day."

The new facility is expected to open in December.
