Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The Gamecocks are moving a step closer to getting a new practice facility.

Columbia's Planning Commission approved the University of South Carolina's plans at a meeting Monday evening.

The vote was unanimous.

The details of the plan include an expansive 112,970 sq. ft. facility on Bluff Road, just south of Williams-Brice stadium in the area that is now known as Gamecock Park, but was once home to the state Farmer's Market.

The plans also specify that the new facility must be no taller than 85 feet.

"I saw no reason not to approve it tonight," said Richard Cohn, a member of the City of Columbia Planning Commission after the meeting Monday evening. "The university's expanding. With that, we feel comfortable with what we did tonight. We're pleased to see the growth in the city. We're pleased to see the growth with the university. We're pleased with the growth of private business, and we're trying to take a good, strong, positive look at everything."

The plans will now be recommended to Columbia City Council, Cohn said.

Columbia City Council is expected to be updated some time next month.
