20-year-old Michael Juan Smith was arrested Sunday morning in Columbia's five points.Columbia police say Smith fired two shots from a stolen gun around 2:30 a.m. and tried to flee the scene. Police say one of those bullets hit an 18-year-old USC student who was waiting for a cab.

"This all happened very quickly," said Interim Columbia Police Chief Ruben Santiago. "Our officers were there in 5 seconds and apprehended the suspect in less than a minute."

Santiago says the Columbia Police Department has worked hard to increase safety in the area with officers in bright colored vests, cameras and patrol cars with their blue lights on.

"It makes me question if we are doing everything possible to keep five points safe," said Santiago.

University South Carolina student body president, Chase Mizzell said students are looking for a solution to end the violence.

"This incident demands action, we must all work together because student safety is paramount,"said Mizzell.

The University is planning on meeting with senior officials to discuss student safety.

Santiago says the student is in critical but stable condition.
