Columbia, SC (WLTX) -The University of South Carolinabroke ground Friday on a new building dedicated to alumni.

The facility will be located at Senate and Lincoln Streets in the Vista where the Damon's Restaurant used to be.

The 63,000 square foot building will serve as the headquarters for the My Carolina Alumni Association, which has been nearly a decade in the making.

"Itreally gives us a chance to bring or alumni back home. As you know with an urban campus trying to find a place where we can meet, have parking, get together and blend both learning and alumni activities," said Jack Claypoole of the My Carolina Alumni Association. "We really haven't had that space on campus this will be the first time that I'm able to do that."

Construction on the facility will begin in January and they hope to open by spring of 2015.
