Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The suspect accused of shooting a University of South Carolina student is now facing a federal charge.

Afederal grand juryhanded down an indictment against Michael Juan Smith, 20, for violating a federal firearm statue. The law prohibits anyone convicted of a crime with a punishment over one year frompossessing a weapon and ammunition.

Federal prosecutors say Smith used a Glock .40 caliber gun during the crime.

Back on October 13th, Columbia police say Smith shot 18-year-old Martha Childress in Columbia's Five Points. The shooting left the woman paralyzed.

She is currently receiving treatment in Atlanta.

He is still facing multiple charges in Richland County for the shooting, including assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.
