Columbia, SC (WLTX) Some of the first black athletes to attend the University of South Carolina were honored by the university Friday night.

Called "Celebrating Pioneers and Embracing Change" the event was held at the Colonial Life Arena.

Three former athletes were honored; Jackie Brown the first black football player to earn a varsity letter for the Gamecocks, Carlton Haywood who was also one of USC's first black football playersand the first to get a football scholarship and Casey Manning who was the first black basketball player for the university.

Jackie Brown's son, Ansel Brown was standing in for his father who has passed away said, "To come here to USC and see the legacy that my father has left for so many others that have come after him, so many other young minorities, young African-Americans, female students here at the university are following in his footsteps, it means the world to me."

Both Haywood and Brown keep up with Gamecocks football and basketball.

Manning is the 5th circuit court judge and current color commentator for the USC men's basketball team.
