Columbia, SC (WLTX)-- Ben White is a 5th grade teacher at Bookman Road Elementary School and for the last 3 years he's been making an incredible difference in his student's lives.

Keyanni Turner sent in one of the nomination letters that led to us selecting Mr. White as this week's Golden Apple Winner.

Keyanni said, "My letter really explains how Mr. White is an awesome teacher. I thank God that I actually have a good teacher to talk to about my problems and about everything."

This is Mr. White's second career. He spent 25 years as a nuclear pharmacy technician. He says he made the move from meds to kids because of his passion for education and love for children. Becoming a father 6 years ago, was the final push he needed to take a chance on a career he's always admired.

Prinicipal Kendra James has noticed the impact Mr. White makes every day. "All of our students from kindergarten through 5th grade view Mr. White as a wonderful role model and he is.", James said.

Mr. White describes his teaching style as a combination of management and mentorship, with the ultimate goal of shaping young minds for the future.

White admits there are times when he becomes overwhelmed with emotion at the idea of shapping so many young minds.

"I'm a blessed teacher to have them and a blessed teacher to be at this great school. I consider myself a strong man and there have been times that I have been in this classroom and i've asked for a tissue.", White said.
