Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Richland County deputies say a man who escaped custody from the Richland County jail Wednesday has been recaptured.

Officers say they found 32-year-old Sidney Eugene Mitchell just after 11:30 a.m. inside a vacant home. They say he tried to escape again, but was caught.

Officer Jennifer Timmons with the Columbia Police Department says Mitchell was arrested overnight on a DUI charge.According to police, Mitchell drove on the wrong side of the road and crashed into a parked vehicle along Hemphill Street.

When he about to bebrought insidethe jail, officers reported that he was incoherent and was being combative. Paramedics then were called to the scene to check him out.

As he was being put onastretcher to be put in an ambulance, police say Mitchell hit one of their officers in the head and ran away.

Deputies and police searched forMitchell near the jail along Bluff Road for nearly two hours. They usedK-9 officers as well as officers drivingATVs in the woods in their effort to find him.
