ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - The wife of Branchville Fire Chief Alan Oakley was on probation for Medicare fraud at the time she was charged with killing her husband.
The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports that 40-year-old Melody Oakley was sentenced to three years of probation late last year after pleading guilty to her part in a scheme by the Williston Rescue Squad to bill Medicare for ambulance rides that weren't medically necessary.

The rescue squad has agreed to pay $800,000 to resolve the case without admitting guilt.
Investigators say Melody Oakley and two other women planned to kill Oakley's husband. He was found dead with a stab wound to the neck last month.
All three women are charged with murder.
