Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The owners of Taboo Adult Store on Devine Street in Columbia have filed for a temporary restraining order in federal court that would allow them to remain open while their case goes before a judge.

The store lost its business license in December. Taboo has remained open since then, however. It is the only adult store in the city limits.

Jeff White, Taboo's owner, says the city violated his constitutional civil rights by trying to stop them from "disseminating a lawful adult message."

The federal lawsuit claims that since the store first obtained a business license in December 2011, city leaders have made public statements saying they would take steps to stop his business.

Taboo in federal court Friday made their case, asking the judge to prevent the city from shutting down the business while the legal proceedings continue. They are still waiting on the judge's decision.

Taboo's lawsuit ask for actual, consequential damages, legal fees and an order for the store to be granted a business license.
