Columbia, SC (WLTX) -University of South Carolinapresident Dr. Harris Pastides is calling for a tuition time out.

Over the past decade, state funding to the university has dwindled to just 10 percent ofthe school'sbudget, which has caused the school to raise tuition to help make ends meet.

Pastides says the current situation isn't sustainable, because it puts an increased burden on students and parents.

"In good faith we offer to freeze tuition," said in a videotaped segment. "And in return we ask our state legislature to offer a small increase in state funding and a commitment to work with us for a long term funding solution."

Pastides is calling for students and alumni to contact their state lawmakers in an effort to get them to support his proposal.
