Columbia, SC (WLTX) - With the extreme weather there will be a lot of homeless people looking for a warm place to stay. At the Oliver Gospel mission in Downtown Columbia they will be adding more beds and need your help to feed those in need.
"The pantry at the Oliver Gospel Mission may look full, but with the winter storm coming they are adding more beds meaning they need more food.
"We do 250 meals a day and we have about 98 beds," said Wayne Fields, CEO of Oliver Gospel Mission.
But for the next two days the residents at the shelter will increase by about 35%.
Fields says they usually only feed about 50 people during the middle of the day and need help feeding more than 130 people during this week.
"Now with the "Operation Winter Storm," with the ice and cold weather coming we will not only put out the extra mats, we are also going to let men stay in during the day to get them out of this freezing rain and snow and we will be serving some extra meals."
Oliver Gospel is asking you to bring items like peanut butter and jelly and bread. They also need other items in case the power goes out.
"Bottled water is huge; we don't know what will happen with power so flashlights and batteries, all those things will be helpful or even a financial donation will help cover the cost for these extra expenses."
"These people don't always have good attitudes but we are not about attitudes we are about helping people in need and it's a team effort so the people listening to this right now, you are a part of a team that can help us in this effort right now."
If you want to help, bring your donations Tuesday to the Oliver Gospel Mission by 2PM.
The shelter is located on the corner of Taylor and Assembly Streets in downtown Columbia.
