West Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Governor Nikki Haley has declared a state of emergency the winter storm beginning moving through the state.

Derrec Becker with the South Carolina Emergency Management divisionsays the decision was made shortly before noon. That allowedthe state'semergency operations center to be activated.

Becker says the declarations allows the state to enact planning and mobilize state resources.

The state is now at Operating Condition 3, meaningan emergency situation is possible or imminent.

All state agencies--including the Department of Transportation, the Highway Patrol, and the Department of Health and Environmental Control--have sent representatives to theemergency ops centerin West Columbia.

"Here wewill coordinate any potential situation that may arise," Becker said. "Anything in regards to the roadways, any request that may come in from county emergency offices and also shelters that may be needed."

Becker says thestate transportation departmenthas been out salting the roads, and doing whatever they can to get the state ready.

"We'll be here for as long as the storm is here," Becker said.
