Columbia, SC (WLTX) - State Department of Transportation trucks have been out on the roads, preparing them for the winter storm.

SCDOT officials say they began connecting all the snow plows, sand spreaders, andcalcium chloride truckson Monday. There were out until 11 p.m. Monday making repairs to some of the vehicles to ensure they would work.

The agency's first priority is preppting interstate routes around the Columbia area. They will then fan out Highway 378 and Highway 601.

Before they left, SCDOT employees actually had to break up some of the salt compound store in the shed that had clumped together. Much of the salt store there hasn't been needed in years.

The SCDOT says they use salt rather than sand on the interstates because sand can get imbedded in the asphalt used on the roads.
