Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- If the Midlands receives a lot of ice, power outages will be a problem.

The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina are preparing their crews to respond to the potential problem.

They say just one inch of ice can break power lines.

If ice gets on tree branches, it can weigh them down and cause entire trees to fall into power lines, causing tremendous outages.

ECSC tells News19 the best thing for residents to do if the power goes out is to report it immediately and be patient.
