Fairfield County, SC (WLTX) - Fairfield County is dealing with snow and slippery roads Tuesday from the winter storm.

Fairfield County Chief Deputy Keith Lewis said the freezing rain began around 1:30 a.m., and then changed over to freezing rain around 3:30 a.m.

Lewis said roads were fine early, but as the morning progressed, quickly deteriorated. He said there were multiple car accident, including one fatality on Peach Road near Ridgeway.

Deputies spent part of their day checking on the elderly who are home alone and helping people who work at nursing homes get to their jobs safely.

Ice is in the forecast to fall bothTuesday evening and Wednesday in the county.

"It's only going to get worse," Lewis said. "If you don't have to be on the road, stay off the road."

Schools in the county closed around 9 a.m. Tuesday, and will also be closed Wednesday.
