Columbia, SC (WLTX) -Governor Nikki Haley has declared a state of emergency in South Carolina.

The declaration went into effect at noon Tuesday. The South Carolina Emergency Division is now on Operating Condition 3.

Op Con 3 allows them to coordinate efforts statewide. They will be operating 24 hours a day as long as the winter event remains.

Haley says state law enforcement is ready to respond. The Department of Social Services and the state health department
are working on preparing shelters, and the Department of Natural Resources and the National Guard are on standby ready to assist.

Haley warns this won't be the samestorm we say two weeks ago and urges people to stay off home.

"It is not safe for anybody to be out riding a bike, car or anything on the roads tomorrow," Haley said. "The main thing I can stress is be ready for power outages because when you have this much ice you're gonna have a lot of ice sitting on those power lines we expect multiple power outages."

Haley also urges people to make sure they have a way to stay warm, to have plenty of food, and to make sure you check on the elderly.
