Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The Department of Transportation is working to make the roads as safe as possible.

State employees have been treating the roads both Monday and Tuesday with a brine solution and salt. Their main focus on bridges, since those can freeze over quickly because they're elevated.

"Right now we try to stay ahead of the weather, basically get product on the ground to make sure that it's there before it gets cold before it starts to freeze over, remove anything that's in the road, naturally, and treat it before the temperature drops," said Robert Paff with SCDOT.

Road crews are prepared to work around the clock. However, they say the best advise for drivers is to stay off the roads.
