Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Finding affordable banking services, with decent interest rates on deposits, in addition to charging reasonable fees, is difficult to find in South Carolina, according to a recent survey.
South Carolina ranks among the 10 worst states for affordable banking, according to a study by GoBankingRates.com, that looked at the rates consumers could expect to earn on savings and checking accounts, required minimum balances necessary to avoid monthly account fees, and the fees charged for bounced checks and basic transactions like withdrawals at ATMs not belonging to the bank..
The 10 least affordable states for banking consumers includes overdraft fees averaging over $30 per non-sufficient funds transactions, high minimum balance requirements, and high monthly account maintenance fees for those who didn't meet that minimum balance level.
South Carolina's average overdraft fee: $34.
On the flip-side of the survey, the 10 best states for consumer banking include a decent interest paid to consumers for checking accounts, low out-of-network ATM fees, a comparatively low minimum monthly balance to avoid account maintenance fees, and lower-than-average overdraft fees.
