Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Governor Nikki Haley has requested a major disaster declaration from the federal government for parts of South Carolina affected by last month's winter storm.

Haley wants the status for 21 counties in the state impacted by the weather system that moved through the state February 10th through the 14th.

The governor's office estimates the state's suffered $55 million in damage. If the request is approved, the government could pick up as much as 75 percent of the costs expended by the state and local governments.

South Carolina hasn't requested a major disaster declaration since 2006.
