Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A father arrested at Dreher High School on charges that he assaulted a school resource officer has been released from jail.

David Bass, 47, got into a confrontation at the school Thursday morning.

According to a Columbia Police Department incident report, Bass had been called to the school because of a medical situation involving his daughter. EMS were called to the scene and were asked to transport the student to the hospital.

When Bass arrived, the girl was inside a conference room with EMS personnel. According to the report, the father asked to see his daughter, but was told by the school resource officer to stand by until EMS finished talking to the student.

Police say Bass then kicked in the door to the conference room, and began physically attacking the school resource officer. The report says Bass grabbed the officer by the neck and and pushed his head into the wall, leaving a hole in the wall.

Another officer on the scene helped EMS and the SRO take Bass into custody. The officer suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Bass has since been released from jail on bond.

Richland School District One says Bass worked as an assistant swim coach at Dreher, but has now been fired from that role. Bass was not actually a district employee, but did receive pay for his work.

News19 spoke to Bass' attorney Friday, who said his client was sorry for his behavior and that he was happy to see that the officer was okay.
