Irmo, SC (WLTX) - Traffic is moving again on Interstate 26 following an incident that shut down the highway at the Harbison Boulevard exit.

Columbia police say just before 7 p.m., they got a call that a man was threatening to hurt himself on the bridge that crosses over the interstate. Police asked the Highway Patrol to block all lanes while they dealt with the situation.

Officers say negotiators were able to convince the man to come away from the edge of the bridge, and he was taken to the hospital.

Traffic began flowing again just before 8:30 p.m.

SC Department of Transportation cameras showed traffic backed up for miles in the westbound lanes. The backup also affected traffic on Harbison Boulevard and St. Andrews Road.

News19 has a long-standing policy of not reporting incidents where people threaten themselves, but because this incident affected thousands of people commuting through the city, we felt it was necessary to inform viewers of what took place.
