NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A passenger suffering shortness of breath prompted a commercial airline flight from New York to Ecuador to make an emergency landing at Joint Base Charleston.

Staff Sgt. Anthony Hyatt said the Airbus 330 landed at the base at about 2 a.m. Tuesday. The passenger was given medical assistance and stabilized. The passenger remained on the flight and it continued on its way, leaving about 4:30 a.m.

Hyatt did not know which airline was operating the plane.

Joint Base Charleston shares runways with the Charleston International Airport. The air base handled the emergency stop because there are no ground crews on commercial airport side at that hour.
