DETROIT -- The Nissan motor company is recalling almost 990,000 vehicles in the United States due to a front passenger airbag problem.

The recall includes the 2013 and 2014 model years of the Altima, Leaf, Pathfinder, and Sentra, the NV200 Taxi Van, and two SUVs under the Infinity brand: the 2013 JX35 and 2014 QX50.

Nissan tells the NHTSA that the vehicles' computer software may not detect an adult in the passenger seat, and if that's the case the airbag will not inflate.

Nissan says beginning in mid-April it will notify owners of affected models, and dealers will update the vehicle software for free.
