GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC - One person is in custody after allegedly stealing a marked patrol unit in Georgetown County and leading law enforcement on a chase that ended in North Carolina.

The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office says deputies were notified of mental commitment papers on a person that walked away from the Waccamaw Community Hospital around 8:30 a.m. Deputies tried to take the suspect into custody, who was seen walking down Highway 17 Bypass in Murrells Inlet when a foot chase ensued.

The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Camilo Quiroga Diaz of Surfside Beach, then got access to a marked patrol unit and fled the scene. The vehicle pursuit spanned from Georgetown County to Highway 904, just west of Tabor City, NC, before the suspect was arrested by North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Diaz is charged grand larceny and failure to stop for blue lights. He is currently in custody at the Georgetown County Detention Center.

"This case is under administrative review as to the deputy's actions before, during and after the vehicle was stolen," Georgetown County Sheriff's Office Spokesperson Carrie Cuthbertson said in a press release late Sunday morning.

The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office received assistance from the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Horry County Police Department, Columbus County Sheriff's Office and North Carolina Highway Patrol.
